CV

Born in Liverpool, UK, in 1952, Richard Whitlock studied history and modern languages at Oxford University. While at Oxford he worked for the sculptor Michael Black and for the scenographer Scirard Lancelyn-Green, later studying fine art in Chapel Hill (North Carolina), and at Brighton Art School.

He has authored sculptural, photographic and video installations in many parts of the world: L’âge d’or (2010), was a sculptural installation in an abandoned coal-mine in France, and Double Cube (2007) a sculptural installation in a Turkish baths in Thessaloniki in Greece, transposed in 2008 to the Palace of the Khans in Bakhchisaray in the Crimea. Previous works include Colonne Oblique (2006), a gigantic leaning tower in the Law Courts of St-Etienne in France, and a spatial transformation of a wing of the Talyzin-Ustinov palace in Moscow (MUAR, 2001).

From 2008 he began experimenting with alternative ways of spatial representation, working with photography and film without the linear perspective natural to these media. He has also lectured and published on the question of perspective in photography (see 'publications').

He will be among the artists representing Greece in the 2017 Beijing International Art Biennale at the National Art Museum of China.
